The word entertain comes from the Medieval Latin intertenere, which combines the prefix in- with the suffix tenere, derived from the Indo-European root ten. It originally meant to “hold inside.”
The brain was evolved to react deeply to social backstabbing, murder and other themes that are deeply entertaining to us because they hit on the points our minds were shaped to understand in order to function in a complex world of humans and nature. Entertainment can be found in movies, television and music; sports and games; and in dance, theater, and visual arts.
